White Oak  - Quercus Alba


CHARACTERISTICS




Wood description:
White american oak is similar to the European relative. Sapwood is light and heartwood goes from light brown to dark brown.

Histological structure:
Grain: straight;
Texture: medium to coarse.

Characteristic defects:
Small knots;
It reacts with iron causing stains;
High shrinkage during kilning.

Permeabilty:
average permeable sapwood, impermeable heartwood.

Working properties:
Sawing: trouble-free;
Drying: slow with special care to avoid checks and splits;
Planing: trouble-free;
Glueing: easy;
Nailing and screwing: easy, galvanized or copper nails are recommended;
Finishing: easy.



Main uses:
High class joinery;
Flooring, ceiling, doors … ;
Heavy construction;
Mouldings, domestic wood ware, garments;
Decorative veneering;
Barrels and coffins.

Tensil strength : 1050 kg/cm²
Compressive strength : 513 kg/cm²

Specific weight:
dried 769 kg/ m³.
